A cancer survivor in South Carolina says he was told to cover his face if he wanted to eat at a local restaurant, and his story has people talking.
According to his daughter, Brandy, Kirby went to Forks Pit Stop in Walterboro on Monday, October 8, to get something to eat. Brandy says the owner pulled him into her office before he could sit down and told him he would have to cover his face to eat there. Kirby lost his left eye and his nose during his battle with cancer.
Brandy shared the account on Facebook, explaining that an eye patch rubs her father’s eye socket raw and that the area where his nose was has to stay open.
Kirby told CBS affiliate WCSC the experience left him hurt. “It hurt deep inside,” he said, adding that he had never been treated that way.
The owner, Donna, responded to Brandy’s post, saying she did not mean to hurt him and felt she had no choice because the situation was affecting her customers. CBS News reported that it reached out to Donna and had not heard back. Her husband told WCSC that she was too upset to talk and that the store had been wrongly accused.
Support has poured in for Kirby. Brandy started a GoFundMe, and CBS News reported it raised more than $7,000 from 281 donors in a single day.
What do you think? Was the owner wrong, or is there another side to this story?
