Garret Miller, a Texas man charged in the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, publicly apologized on Monday for a social media post that said “Assassinate AOC,” according to a statement released by his attorney, Clinton Broden.
Authorities say Garret also used social media to threaten a Capitol Police officer, saying he planned to “hug his neck with a nice rope.” He has not been convicted of any charge, and the case is ongoing.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas said Garret, 34, chose to apologize after a federal judge in Dallas ruled he was a danger to the community and a flight risk. He is being held without bail while he awaits trial.
In his statement, Garret said he went to Washington because he believed he was following the instructions of then President Donald Trump, and that Trump’s claims about the election had him believing it was stolen. Those claims about election fraud were false. Garret said he now recognizes that Joe Biden is president and that the election is over.
“I want to publicly apologize to Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez and the Capitol police officers,” he said. He added that he never intended to harm her or any members of the Capitol Police, that he was not armed when he entered the building, and that he left Washington right after Trump asked supporters to go home. He also said he takes full responsibility and is prepared to testify at any trial or congressional proceeding.
The U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. has charged Garret with entering a restricted building or grounds, violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds, obstructing an official proceeding, committing acts during a civil disorder, and making threats in interstate commerce.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez responded on Twitter after the charges were announced, saying the people involved were brazen because they thought they would succeed. She has said she feared for her life that day. On January 12, she said in an Instagram Live video that she did not know if she would make it to the end of the day alive.
