Riley, the woman accused of taking a laptop from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office during the January 6 Capitol riot, now faces additional federal charges.
According to an amended criminal complaint released this week, investigators point to video from the day of the riot. The complaint says Riley can be heard telling a man to put on gloves before touching the laptop, and that she appears to enter and leave the Speaker’s office. Capitol Police told investigators a laptop of the same model was taken from the office and that the video shows the inside of it.
Under the amended complaint, Riley is charged with aiding and abetting others in stealing government property and with obstructing an official proceeding. She also still faces the earlier charges of entering a restricted building without lawful authority and violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds. She was arrested in Pennsylvania earlier in the week.
The complaint says a former partner contacted the FBI more than once and shared video that investigators believe Riley recorded. That person also claimed she planned to send the device to a friend in Russia who would sell it to Russian intelligence. According to the complaint, that plan did not go through. Those are allegations from the filing and have not been proven in court.
Prosecutors also cite an online chat post they say was written by Riley, in which the writer claimed to have taken items from Pelosi’s office. Charges are only accusations. It was not clear whether Riley had retained an attorney at the time of the filing, and no response from her was included in the court papers.
