Accused Baby Killer Casey Anthony Reportedly Helping YNW Melly Prepare for Murder Retrial After Her 2011 Acquittal

Casey Anthony is reportedly helping YNW Melly’s legal defense team prepare for his upcoming double-murder retrial in Florida, bringing an unexpected connection between two of the state’s most widely discussed criminal cases.

According to an exclusive TMZ report published Friday, November 6, Anthony is working as a research assistant for private investigator Patrick McKenna, who was reportedly hired by a law firm representing the rapper. Sources familiar with the arrangement told the outlet that Anthony has been assisting with research related to Melly’s case ahead of his scheduled January 2027 retrial.

The reported arrangement does not mean Anthony is serving as Melly’s attorney or providing legal representation. Instead, her alleged responsibilities involve supporting investigative research for the defense team.

TMZ contacted Anthony, McKenna, Melly’s lawyers, and members of his family for comment but reported receiving no responses at the time of publication. The specific research Anthony is reportedly conducting has not been publicly detailed.

The development connects two individuals whose criminal cases received national attention, although their legal circumstances are different.

YNW Melly, whose real name is Jamell Demons, faces two counts of first-degree murder stemming from the October 2018 killings of his friends and fellow rappers Anthony Williams and Christopher Thomas Jr.

Williams performed under the name YNW Sakchaser, while Thomas was known as YNW Juvy. Both were associated with Melly’s music collective.

Prosecutors allege that Melly fatally shot the two men inside a vehicle before he and another associate, Cortlen Henry, allegedly attempted to make the killings appear to be the result of a drive-by shooting.

Melly has maintained his innocence.

The rapper was arrested in February 2019 and has remained incarcerated while awaiting the resolution of his case. His first murder trial began in 2023 but ended that July when jurors could not reach a unanimous verdict.

A judge declared a mistrial, allowing prosecutors to pursue another trial on the same charges.

The proceedings have faced multiple delays, disputes over evidence, and changes involving the legal teams.

In September 2025, Henry, also known as YNW Bortlen, reached a plea agreement that resolved his pending criminal case. Prosecutors dropped his murder charges, and he received a 10-year prison sentence followed by six years of probation on accessory after the fact and witness-tampering charges.

Melly’s separate witness-tampering prosecution was dismissed in January 2026, but his double-murder charges remain active.

His defense team has also made repeated attempts to secure his release on bond. In May 2026, a Broward County judge denied another request, leaving him in custody as preparations continued for his retrial.

If convicted, Melly could face the death penalty.

Meanwhile, Casey Anthony’s connection to criminal investigations extends beyond her own highly publicized trial.

Anthony became nationally known after her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee Anthony, disappeared in Orlando in 2008. Caylee’s remains were discovered months later, and Anthony was charged with murder.

During her 2011 trial, prosecutors pursued serious charges, including first-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter of a child, and aggravated child abuse.

A Florida jury acquitted Anthony of those charges.

However, jurors convicted her on four misdemeanor counts of providing false information to law enforcement during the investigation. A Florida appeals court subsequently overturned two of those convictions in January 2013, leaving two intact.

McKenna previously worked as an investigator for Anthony’s defense during her murder trial. Their professional relationship continued afterward.

In 2020, The Associated Press reported that Anthony had established a Florida investigative research business called Case Research & Consulting Services. Anthony had also previously described performing online research and investigative work for McKenna.

That background provides an established professional connection between Anthony and the investigator reportedly involved in Melly’s defense.

However, Anthony’s experience as a criminal defendant does not give her the legal qualifications of an attorney, and her reported participation does not establish what influence, if any, she may have on Melly’s defense strategy.

The two cases also involve different evidence, circumstances, and allegations. Anthony’s acquittal does not predict the outcome of Melly’s retrial.
