The Centers for Disease Control is extending the moratorium on evictions until the end of June.
The continuation was announced on Monday, just in time before it was set to expire at the end of March. The nationwide moratorium will now expire on June 30th. Initially introduced in September, the eviction suspension has been extended three times.
“Keeping people in their homes and out of crowded or congregate settings, like homeless shelters, by preventing evictions is a key step in helping to stop the spread of COVID-19,” said CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky.
While the country continues to distribute the COVID-19 vaccine and businesses reopen, we are still not out of the clear yet. According to data from the Center of Budget and Policy Priorities, over 12.1 million adults have fallen behind on their rent payments as of the beginning of March.
However, come June, another issue may arise for renters struggling to get back on their feet. When the moratorium expires, tenants will be expected to pay all outstanding balances or face eviction.
Despite the moratorium, there have been more than 100,000 eviction filings since September, an ominous sign that mass eviction may occur at the end of June.
Nevertheless, renters facing hardships can breathe a sigh of relief for now.
