Lisa Borders has stepped down as president and CEO of Time’s Up after a sexual misconduct allegation was made against her son. The allegation has not been proven, and his attorney says it is false.
Borders announced her resignation earlier this week without giving a reason, citing family concerns that required her full focus. Time’s Up then released a statement explaining the timing. The organization said Borders told its leadership that sexual assault allegations had been made against her son in a private forum, and that within 24 hours she chose to resign. Time’s Up added that both sides agreed it was the right decision and that its actions were guided by its support for survivors.
The Los Angeles Times reported that a woman named Celia, a yoga teacher from Santa Monica, California, accused Borders’ son, Garry, of inappropriate touching during a “healing session” at her home in January. According to the report, Celia shared her account on Facebook. CNN later reported that she confirmed the claim to them and said she was speaking out so that others are not harmed.
Garry’s side strongly disputes the allegation. His attorney told reporters that he denies any inappropriate or nonconsensual touching at any time. The attorney also said Celia thanked Garry after the session and described it in a text message as gentle and loving. The lawyer reportedly showed that message to the Los Angeles Times.
Time’s Up had not offered further comment on the allegation at the time of the reports. Borders had held the top job at the organization for less than four months.
