Chad Johnson’s arrest for allegedly headbutting his wife, Evelyn Lozada, is not his first domestic violence case.
TMZ has obtained Johnson’s certificate of completion from a domestic violence batterers’ treatment program back in 2002. He was ordered into the program after he was convicted of domestic battery for slapping his college girlfriend in 2000.
According to a status report from the program, Johnson was cooperative and made good progress, but “struggled initially with accepting the need to make lifestyle changes as well as minimizing his past behavior.” The report concluded that he eventually came to terms with his problems and that his risk to re-offend appeared low.
Ten years later, he’s facing a domestic battery charge again. Police say Johnson headbutted Evelyn during an argument outside their home in Davie, Florida, on August 11, barely a month after their wedding. The Miami Dolphins released him the next day, and Evelyn has filed for divorce. Johnson has apologized publicly and said he will never say anything bad about her.
TMZ also reports that his college girlfriend has been trying to reach Evelyn on social media because she believes the two of them could help each other heal.
That 2002 report looks a lot different now. Whatever that program taught him, it’s fair to ask whether it was enough.
