Chaka Khan is stirring up a new conversation after opening up about her start in the music industry and her specific experiences with Ike Turner.
While appearing on the Table Manners podcast with host Jessie Ware, the iconic singer looked back at the beginning of her journey with the band Rufus and the role Turner played in their early development.
While Turner’s legacy is often defined by the well documented history with his former wife, Tina Turner, Khan noted that her own interactions with him were rooted in professional support. She recounted how Turner showed early faith in her talent, even flying her and her bandmates to Los Angeles to record. He eventually offered her a prestigious spot as an Ikette, though Khan chose to turn it down to continue building her own path with Rufus.
During the sit-down, Khan acknowledged that her perspective is based on the kindness he showed her personally. “I know people have different experiences with people,” she explained. “But he was a lovely human being to me.” She went on to describe him as “very giving” toward younger artists who were trying to find their footing in a competitive industry.
The remarks have brought a different side of Turner’s complicated history back into the spotlight. While Tina Turner spent years being transparent about the difficulties she faced in their marriage before leaving in the 1970s, Khan’s story highlights the mentorship he provided to her. She remained clear that she was speaking strictly on her own positive encounters.
Chaka Khan says Ike Turner was a ‘lovely human being’ who was just a victim of himself, his career field, and substances
