Charleston White Said Colorism Is Why Latto Gets a Pass and Claressa Shields Does Not

The claim pulled Latto and 21 Savage into a fight that was never theirs, and her response on Live left nothing on the table

Charleston White Says He Was Shot At In Houston And Is Taking It To The FBI

Charleston White argued this week that the reason Claressa Shields catches so much heat over her relationship with Papoose while Latto stays largely untouched over hers with 21 Savage comes down to skin tone, and the claim did exactly what claims like that tend to do. It set the internet on fire and pulled two people into an argument they never asked to join.

Video:

His position was that people should have the same energy for both couples. He pointed at the volume of criticism aimed at Shields and Papoose and asked why Latto does not get the same, then answered his own question by saying Shields would not be dealing with this if she were lighter. Then he went past the argument and into the insult, calling Latto a side chick who got pregnant by a married man.

Latto did not let that sit. She went on Instagram Live and addressed it in real time, denying flatly that she is involved with a married man and telling White he has been loud and wrong for too long. She went after his age and his appearance, calling him an old, ugly, scrawny country expletive, and she made a point of reminding him where she sits financially before warning him about calling her out of her name again.

There is a version of this where the insults are the whole story, and by tonight most outlets will have run that version. The more interesting question is whether the argument underneath them holds up.

The colorism claim is not new and it is not baseless as a general proposition. Black women in the public eye have been graded on a curve tied to complexion for as long as there has been public life, and the way that shows up in relationship discourse specifically is real and well documented. But applying it to these two situations requires ignoring almost everything that makes them different. Shields is dating a man whose divorce from Remy Ma is not finalized, after a marriage of more than sixteen years, with a child involved and a public knockout in the backstory. Latto and 21 Savage’s situation is contested, unconfirmed, and has never been established as a fact by anyone. Those are not the same set of circumstances, and treating them as identical so the difference in reaction can be attributed to one variable is where the argument stops working.

It also matters that Latto’s denial is not the only thing complicating White’s version. Keyanna Joseph, the woman he is describing as 21 Savage’s wife, has never publicly addressed her current relationship status with him. What she has done is show Latto support online, including reacting positively to the pregnancy announcement and liking posts celebrating the couple’s daughter. That does not settle anything, but it is a strange fact pattern for a story that is being sold as a clear cut case of a woman being wronged.

21 Savage weighed in Friday with the simplest possible response, posting on Instagram and calling Latto his wifey. No explanation, no timeline, no addressing the marriage question at all. Just a word.

White came back Saturday on Instagram, saying he meant no harm, and spent a good portion of it enjoying the fact that she responded to him in the first place. He said the exchange proved he is “the voice” now.

That last part is worth sitting with, because it is the honest read on the whole thing. White said something inflammatory about two Black women’s relationships, attached a real cultural argument to it so it would travel, and got a major artist to spend several minutes of her own Live talking about him. By his own account that was the win. The conversation about colorism, which is a genuine one worth having, ends up as the packaging rather than the point.

Latto is a new mother sitting on a career year. Shields is deep in camp for an August 15 fight. Neither of them was doing anything that required a referee.
