Charli Baltimore speaking during her Art of Dialogue interview about the Un Rivera stabbing

The Un Rivera stabbing story just picked up a new witness, and it comes from someone who was inside the Kit Kat Club the night it happened. In a July 7 sit down with The Art of Dialogue, Charli Baltimore said she walked in on the aftermath of the 1999 incident that has trailed Jay-Z for more than 26 years, and her version does little to settle the mystery that still surrounds it.

Baltimore, who was signed to Lance “Un” Rivera’s Untertainment Records at the time, said she missed the altercation itself and arrived as the club was emptying out. By then Rivera was on the ground and nearly the only person left, still wearing a coat that hid the wound so she could not see any blood at first. When she got to him and asked what was going on, she said he kept repeating that Jay-Z stabbed him. She assumed he was in shock and told him to stop saying it.

Here is what is actually on the record about the Un Rivera stabbing. The attack happened December 2, 1999 at the Kit Kat Club in Times Square during the release party for Q-Tip’s album Amplified. The confrontation was widely reported to stem from the alleged bootlegging of Jay-Z’s then unreleased Vol. 3 Life and Times of S. Carter. Jay-Z turned himself in the next day and initially denied everything, facing up to 15 years on a felony assault charge. In October 2001 he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor third degree assault and received three years of probation. Rivera settled a civil claim out of court for a reported figure between 500,000 and 1 million dollars.

For most of the years that followed, Rivera told the Un Rivera stabbing story the same way Baltimore heard it that night, with Jay-Z as the man who did it. Then, in a 2023 interview with DJ Vlad, he reversed himself completely. Rivera said Jay-Z was not the person who stabbed him, described him as a nice guy whose history never included that kind of violence, and pointed to Nas as the one who told the truth years earlier. On the 2001 diss record “Ether,” Nas rapped that Jay’s man stabbed Un and let Jay take the blame. Rivera has still never named who he says actually did it.

Baltimore’s new account of the Un Rivera stabbing sits right in the middle of those two versions and refuses to pick a side. She said Un kept saying Jay’s name but could have been in shock, and she confirmed she saw Jay and his people heading out as she was walking in. Pressed on the theory that Rivera was targeted for leaking the album, she said that is only what she heard. In her telling, the only person who truly knows is whoever held the knife, and she is not even sure Rivera himself ever understood why it happened.

She also drew a hard line around her own name. The interviewer floated a separate rumor that Jay had once stabbed Baltimore too, and she shut it down immediately, saying she has stated plainly that Jay never stabbed her. The whole Un Rivera stabbing saga, she suggested, has hardened into rap lore that no longer matches how serious that night really was. She pointed out that Rivera could have died, and said it is not the kind of story she wants attached to her name almost three decades later.
What Baltimore will not do is claim to solve it. She said flatly that she does not think the public will ever get to the bottom of it, and questioned why people are still arguing about it at all. Coming from one of the few people who was actually in the building, that may be the closest thing to a final word this story ever gets.
