He did try to soften it. He kept saying he loves Denzel, that he is not biased, that Denzel is amazing and nobody should get it twisted. None of that mattered the second the clip hit the timeline, because the names Will Smith and Denzel Washington in the same sentence are basically a trigger phrase for Black film fans.
Here is where the wider room comes in, because Charlie Mack is far from the only person who has ever weighed in on this. It is a debate that has lived in barbershops, group chats, and quote tweets for the better part of two decades, and it almost always splits the same way. One camp says Denzel is the actor and Will is the movie star, the line being that you forget you are watching Denzel while you always know you are watching Will. Will’s gift is genre flexibility, the ability to anchor a buddy comedy, a sci fi spectacle, and a sports drama in the same career.
