A Chicago man has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison after firing a gun into a grave during a funeral, according to Fox News.
Elston, 57, pleaded guilty to one count of illegal possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon and was sentenced on July 1. Prosecutors say that in November 2017 at Evergreen Cemetery in Evergreen Park, he fired a single shot into the grave of Murad, a man who had been killed in his own driveway in Palos Heights two days earlier. Authorities say he then waved the gun at mourners as he fled and was taken into custody near the cemetery gate.
Patch reports that investigators initially considered Elston a suspect in Murad’s killing but ultimately ruled him out.
In the government’s sentencing memorandum, an assistant U.S. attorney wrote that the mourners were in the immediate vicinity and were placed in danger by the reckless firing of the weapon.
