The trade tensions between the U.S. and China are heating back up—and Beijing is not mincing words. On Tuesday, Chinese officials issued a direct warning to the Trump administration: think twice before bringing back the tariff war.

After months of uneasy calm following a trade framework agreement in June, things are shifting again Donald Trump is moving to reinstate steep tariffs on Chinese imports starting August 1, unless new deals are struck. China, which previously faced tariffs north of 100%, has until August 12 to get back to the negotiating table or face more restrictions.

In response, China’s state-run paper, People’s Daily, fired off a stern message. In a commentary signed by “Zhong Sheng” — a byline used to express official foreign policy views — the outlet called Trump’s tariff plans “bullying” and warned that Beijing will not stand down. “Dialogue and cooperation are the only way forward,” the paper stated, while insisting that protecting China’s interests is non-negotiable.

But it’s not just the U.S. that’s in Beijing’s crosshairs. China is also watching other countries that may be trying to sidestep them. Nations like Vietnam have already inked deals with Washington to reduce tariffs, but China says if any country sacrifices Chinese interests for American favors, they will respond “resolutely.”

The numbers tell the story of an intense trade standoff. U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods now average 51.1%, while China’s duties on U.S. imports sit at 32.6%. Both sides are covering nearly all their mutual trade. And if things don’t cool off fast, global supply chains could be in for another major shake-up.
