As we previously reported, Pacers forward Chris Copeland was stabbed outside New York hotspot 1 OAK this week.
A 1 OAK spokesperson said Copeland and a female companion, Katrine, were inside the club for about 10 minutes before leaving and walking toward Fulton Houses, where their car was parked. The club representatives also said the man accused in the attack never came into the club, and that Copeland and Katrine were trying to get back to the club for help.
The New York Daily News, citing a source, reported that the man accused in the attack was close by and listening in on a conversation, and that an argument broke out. The source said the man then stabbed Copeland in the abdomen and elbow, and that Katrine was also slashed. A woman who knew the accused man was reportedly injured by accident. The Daily News also reported that Copeland’s driver held the accused man until police arrived. These accounts have come from sources and have not been confirmed by police.
Copeland was set to play the Knicks alongside the Pacers on Wednesday night. According to ESPN’s Josina Anderson, the knife hit Copeland’s diaphragm and he is expected to remain in the ICU for another two to three days. After surgery, Copeland issued a statement thanking fans for their support and saying he looks forward to coming back stronger than ever.
