Christa Pike Wakes Up After Botched Execution, Now Tennessee Faces Questions About What Happens To Her Next

Christa Pike is awake and speaking nearly a week after Tennessee tried and failed to execute her by lethal injection, marking a major change from the days she spent unconscious and dependent on a ventilator.

According to the Associated Press, Pike’s attorneys announced Tuesday, October 6, that she has regained consciousness while continuing to receive intensive medical treatment. Her legal team said, “Against all odds, Christa Pike is conscious, speaking, and continues to receive critical medical care.”

The attorneys said Pike suffered severe damage to her arms during the September 30 execution attempt and remains handcuffed and shackled to her hospital bed. They described her recovery so far as medically unprecedented but cautioned that doctors still do not know what her long-term prognosis will be. They expect her recovery to be lengthy.

The update is significant because Pike had remained unconscious for several days after she was transported by ambulance from Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. As recently as Sunday, attorney Stephen Ferrell told the Associated Press that he was not aware of Pike regaining consciousness and that she had remained on a ventilator while doctors treated her.

The medical crisis followed Tennessee’s attempt to execute the 50-year-old using pentobarbital on September 30. According to Reuters, prison officials administered two doses of the drug, but Pike did not die. Her attorneys said both of her arms became swollen, burned, and blistered after problems developed with the intravenous lines used to deliver the drug.

Her lawyers have argued that at least some of the pentobarbital entered tissue surrounding the veins rather than traveling properly through her bloodstream. Reuters reported that Pike’s attorneys had warned state officials before the execution that she had small veins and thrombocytosis, a blood condition they believed could make IV placement difficult.

One of Pike’s attorneys said he counted at least seven needle insertion sites on her left arm and saw one needle bend during an unsuccessful attempt to establish access. State officials have not publicly provided a detailed explanation for why the execution failed.

Witnesses said the problems continued even after the execution drugs were administered. Pike continued breathing, made snoring sounds, and complained that her arm hurt. She ultimately survived both doses and was removed from the prison by ambulance rather than being pronounced dead inside the execution chamber.

The Tennessee Department of Correction said afterward that officials had followed the state’s established execution protocol and that the protocol did not authorize additional procedures beyond what had already been attempted. The department confirmed that Pike had been transported to an outside medical facility.

Pike’s failed execution has now triggered another examination of Tennessee’s death penalty system. Gov. Bill Lee ordered an independent investigation into the state’s capital punishment procedures and canceled Tennessee’s remaining execution scheduled for 2026.

The incident came only months after another Tennessee execution was stopped. AP reported that officials abandoned the May execution of Tony Carruthers after staff successfully placed one IV but could not establish the required second line. Pike’s case went further because the execution drugs were actually administered before officials determined the process had failed.

Christa Pike has been on death row for decades for the 1995 killing of her Knoxville Job Corps classmate Colleen Slemmer. Pike was 18, and Slemmer was 19 when Pike, her boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp, and another student took Slemmer to a wooded area in Knoxville. Pike and Shipp were convicted of first-degree murder.

Prosecutors said the killing involved a prolonged attack in which Slemmer was beaten and cut. Prosecutors argued that Pike viewed Slemmer as a romantic rival. Pike has not denied killing Slemmer, although her attorneys unsuccessfully sought to stop her execution by citing her age at the time of the crime, her history of childhood abuse and evidence of untreated mental illness.

Had the September 30 execution been completed, Reuters reported that Pike would have become the first woman executed by Tennessee in more than two centuries.

What happens next remains unsettled. Pike’s attorneys are seeking a court order requiring the Tennessee Department of Correction to preserve evidence from the failed execution, including drug lot information, records, and other materials. A court status conference is scheduled for Wednesday, October 7.

Her attorneys have also asked that her death sentence be commuted to life imprisonment. No decision has been announced on that request.

For now, Christa Pike remains hospitalized after surviving an execution that was intended to end her life. Her ability to regain consciousness and speak represents the clearest improvement in her condition since she was rushed away from Riverbend last week, but her attorneys say the extent of the physical damage and what recovery will ultimately look like remain unknown.
