“He Was Supposed to Downgrade” Claressa Shields Says That Is Why Women Come for Her

The undisputed champ told Cam Newton the backlash was never about Remy Ma, and she broke down her timeline with Papoose down to the exact date

Shields told Cam Newton on Funky Friday that the women who come for her over her relationship with Papoose are not upset about a marriage ending, they are upset about who he ended up with. “He was supposed to downgrade,” she said. “He’s supposed to go to, like, some Instagram model who got, like, two, 2,000 followers and do that. He ain’t supposed to be able to bag the greatest. That’s the problem to me.”

It is the most direct read she has offered on nearly two years of online noise, and it reframes the entire thing as a status question rather than a moral one. Her position is that there was never a triangle to begin with. “She’s over there living her happy life. We’re over here living our happy life. Our happy lives never were intertwined. Never.” Shields said she has stayed out of it on purpose. “We not gonna fight. That’s not my lane. You do what you do. I do what I do.”

Then Cam put the accusation to her plainly, that she broke up a happy home, and Claressa Shields answered it with a calendar. She said she met Papoose on July 6, 2024. When Cam asked why Papoose knocked out the man in question, she pointed to a much earlier date. “That, that was back in 2021, 2022. I ain’t know Pap. I met him 2024, July 6th to be exact. So it wasn’t a happy home to break up.”

The man neither of them names is Eazy the Block Captain, the battle rapper Remy Ma has since been publicly linked to. Papoose confirmed the altercation himself in December 2024, saying he knocked Eazy out at a Chrome 23 event and that the reason was disrespect rather than the affair itself. “I didn’t knock him out because he slept with my wife,” he wrote. “I knocked him out because he shook my hand. And then slept with my wife.” Eazy confirmed a fight happened but disputed the description, saying he never fell and never touched the ground. Both Papoose and Remy Ma later deleted the posts from that stretch. The specific year Shields cites is her account and has not been independently confirmed.

Her explanation for the long silence is one a lot of people in the business will recognize. She said the standard advice to celebrities is to say nothing and let it run, and she had a much bigger reason to follow it. Her biopic, The Fire Inside, opened on Christmas Day 2024 and stayed in theaters for three months. “Everybody was like, Clarissa, this is too big of a moment. I’m not about to try to explain for nobody.” She said the people who matter to her already know the truth.

On the divorce itself, Claressa Shields was measured in a way she usually is not on this subject. “Divorce doesn’t happen overnight,” she said. “They talking about, I don’t know how long they was married, 16 something plus years. That’s a lot of stuff to divide and figure out. And it’s a kid involved.” Papoose and Remy Ma share a daughter, Reminisce Mackenzie, born in December 2018. Asked whether she has a relationship with the child, Shields said no, and drew a hard line around it. “I don’t think people should involve kids in grown folks’ business. That’s how I was raised. But whenever that time comes and they both decide, hey, it’s time for her to do whatever, whatever, that’s what’ll happen.”

She also cleared up the living situation that has fueled its own round of speculation. Papoose keeps his place in New York, she keeps hers in Atlanta, and she described it as “half and half,” with the two of them together constantly. Papoose confirmed the separate homes in his own interview earlier this year.

Then came the line that will travel furthest. Asked about juggling a public relationship, Claressa Shields cut in with “we having a baby next year,” and repeated it. Worth keeping in perspective: this is a plan she has been stating publicly since July 2025, when she told The Pivot podcast the same thing almost word for word and explained she did not want to wait until she was 40 to start a family. By March 2026 she was talking about the end of that year. The intention has not changed, the calendar keeps moving.

On August 4, Shields went after a Streetz 94.5 FM host who had asked how long she planned to be with “somebody’s husband,” an exchange that pulled Eva Marcille into the conversation on the host’s side. Days before that, Remy Ma performed at Angie Martinez’s Summer BBQ and delivered a line fans read as aimed at Papoose. Shields, meanwhile, is deep in camp for her August 15 fight against Kaye Scott.

What she keeps returning to is that none of the anger has anything to do with her. “I ain’t never done nothing to none of y’all,” she said. “All I did was be in a happy relationship, be with him.”
