Two Cleveland Browns players are speaking out after police were called to their shared apartment. David Njoku and Rashard Higgins say they were not involved in an alleged sexual assault reported at the home.
According to TMZ, a 22 year old woman told police she was assaulted at the apartment in the early hours of a Saturday morning after a night out. TMZ reported that she named a friend of the players, Kashwayne, as the person who assaulted her and said he took her phone when she tried to call 911. Kashwayne was arrested on suspicion of rape and obstruction of justice, the outlet reported, after police said he gave them a fake ID. An arrest is not a conviction, and no response from Kashwayne was included in the reports we reviewed.
Both players were questioned by police. Higgins said he was not at the apartment when the alleged incident happened. Njoku said he was in his room the entire evening and did not know anything had happened.
The Browns also responded in a statement to Ohio.com. “Rashard immediately notified us of the situation and he and David fully cooperated with the police while being interviewed,” the team said. The statement added that the players were not the target of any allegations involving illegal activity and that they will keep cooperating with authorities.
