The wildly popular cult hit Comedy Central series Reno 911 that aired from 2003 to 2009 is being revived by Quibi, an upcoming American mobile video platform headquartered in Los Angeles.
The streaming service has picked up the show’s seventh season, with co-creators Robert Ben Garant, Kerri Kenney-Silver and Thomas Lennon returning both onscreen and as writers. The original show’s cast included Niecy Nash, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Cedric Yarbrough, though it is unclear if they will be returning for the reboot.
“Reno 911 holds a special place in our hearts, and it will be a delight to get the original cast back together for ‘reboot goofin.’ Hopefully, Nick Swardson can still roller-skate,” joked Lennon.
In addition to Reno 911, the mobile short-form streaming service has approved more than 50 scripted and unscripted shows, which will release in “chapters” of eight to 10 minutes each. Quibi also plans to feature short daily news and sports programs. Users have the option to pay $5 monthly for a version with ads and $8 to watch without ads.
Quibi was founded in 2018 by Jeffrey Katzenberg and former eBay CEO Meg Whitman and has secured an impressive $100 million in ad sales ahead of its official 2020 launch. The company is estimated to spend close to $1 billion within its first year on original content.
