Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett is standing by her comments toward Marjorie Taylor Greene.
During a U.S. House oversight committee meeting on Thursday, which was set to vote on whether Attorney General Merrick Garland should be held in contempt, tensions flared after Greene commented on Crockett’s appearance.
“I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading,” Greene remarked.
Moments later, Republican committee chair James Comer ruled that Greene’s comment did not violate the rules, which led to a heated exchange. Crockett sought clarification and then fired back at Greene.
“I’m curious. To better understand your ruling, if someone on this committee starts talking about someone’s bleach blonde, bad-built butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities?” Crockett responded.
The following day, Crockett appeared on CNN to discuss the exchange, revealing that she has “no regrets” about her choice of words.
“I have no regrets, and I’ll tell you why,” Crockett said. “Marjorie Taylor Greene is the kind of person that if you give her an inch, she’ll take a mile. The fact is they continue to allow her to break the rules of decorum.”
She continued, “So if I just sit there and say, ‘Oh well, Marjorie said it about me,’ what’s to stop her from doing it again and again? At the end of the day, I was elected as a representative of Congress, but that doesn’t mean I’m supposed to be a doormat.”
CNN’s Abby Phillips questioned Crockett’s response, suggesting that the comment could be seen as stooping to Greene’s level. However, the Congresswoman remained unapologetic.
“Michelle Obama famously said, ‘When they go low, we go high.’ Are those days basically over?” she asked. “I don’t know that we can even call this a low. I mean, she goes to hell, and then I do my best to remind her why she should not cross me.”
In a display of pettiness, Crockett also took the opportunity to monetize the situation by putting her viral phrase on a T-shirt.
“So we are going to drop ‘A Crockett Clapback Collection,’” she wrote. “This collection will feature various swag that includes random things I’ve said. The money will go to ensuring that we have a Democratic House! Give me a little time to get the swag online, but B6 will drop first. If you have things you want to see come to life, let me know. Post graphics or just phrases that you want to see.”
