A Connecticut man has been arrested in connection with the death of his landlord after a reported dispute over unpaid rent.
According to the Hartford Courant, Jerry was renting a room from Victor inside Victor’s home on Asylum Avenue in Hartford. Over the weekend, the two reportedly argued over the unpaid rent, and police say Jerry allegedly threatened Victor with a samurai sword during the dispute.
On Saturday, Victor reportedly reported the threats to police. The next day, friends said they could not reach him. By Sunday afternoon, officers entered the home and found his body, according to reports. Roughly six hours later, Jerry was located in Hartford’s North End.
Police say he declined to speak with them. Instead, he reportedly wrote a note pointing officers to a paper in his vehicle. Authorities say the paper identified him as a sovereign citizen, a term for people who reject the authority of the government’s legal system. Reports also say he declined to speak with investigators or his public defender.
He is being held on a $2 million bond. The charges are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
