Cook County Deputy Shamone Duncan, a 20-year veteran of the Cook County Department of Corrections, was tragically shot and killed while on vacation in Turks and Caicos on Saturday, January 18. The fatal shooting occurred near Grace Bay Road in Providenciales, according to the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RT&CIPF).

The incident took place around 10:00 p.m. local time outside Aziza Restaurant & Lounge, where Duncan was celebrating her sister’s birthday. Police reported that gunfire erupted following an argument downstairs, and Duncan was struck by a stray bullet while at a rooftop party.

Acting Police Commissioner Rodney Adams confirmed in a news release that officers responded to reports of gunfire near a bar on Grace Bay Road. “Responding officers discovered three individuals injured during the shooting, one of whom succumbed to injuries at the scene while the other at the hospital,” Adams stated.

Duncan and a local resident, Dario Stubbs, were both killed in the shooting. A third victim, a 29-year-old man, was injured and remains hospitalized. Police emphasized there is no evidence to suggest that Duncan, Stubbs, or the wounded individual were specifically targeted. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

Duncan’s family said she was killed on her second night in Turks and Caicos, where she was vacationing to celebrate her sister’s birthday. Her daughter, Payton, recounted the chaos to ABC 7 Chicago, saying, “People started yelling, telling people to ‘get down.’ Everybody got down, and my mom got up. And then she got hit … Bystanders came and they tried to help.”

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office expressed their profound sorrow in a statement: “It is with unimaginable sorrow that we, the family of Sheriff Shamone A. Duncan, announce her tragic passing. Shamone was a proud native of Chicago, born and raised in the city she loved and served tirelessly … Above all, Shamone was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend.”

Duncan, who was recently assigned to Cermak Health Services, is survived by her son, two daughters, and a granddaughter.
