The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has refused to hear USA Gymnastics’ appeal to allow gymnast Jordan Chiles to keep her bronze medal from the Paris Olympics.
USA Gymnastics shared the news in a statement Monday, expressing their deep disappointment after being informed by CAS that their rules prohibit the reconsideration of an arbitral award—even when significant new evidence emerges.
“We are deeply disappointed by the notification and will continue to pursue every possible avenue and appeal process, including to the Swiss Federal Tribunal, to ensure the just scoring, placement, and medal award for Jordan,” the governing body stated.
Chiles initially placed fifth in the individual floor exercise at the Paris Olympics. However, after her coaches challenged the scoring of one of the elements in her routine, she was rightfully moved up to the bronze medal position. The latest decision by CAS now leaves the young gymnast in a difficult position as she fights to hold on to the medal she worked so hard to earn.
