A luxury expedition cruise in the Atlantic has become the focus of an urgent international health response after a deadly viral outbreak left multiple passengers dead and others critically ill. According to the World Health Organization, “Of the six affected individuals, three have died and one is currently in intensive care,” as authorities work to assess the scope of a suspected hantavirus outbreak onboard. The vessel, identified as the MV Hondius and operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, was sailing off the coast of West Africa when the situation escalated.
Health officials report that at least six individuals have been affected, including one laboratory-confirmed case and five others still under investigation. One passenger remains in critical condition in intensive care in South Africa, while additional crew members have also required urgent medical attention. Two symptomatic passengers remain onboard as authorities in Cape Verde have not yet authorized disembarkation for medical evacuation.
Local health teams have boarded the vessel to evaluate the outbreak, but efforts to remove infected individuals have so far been delayed. Behind the scenes, the World Health Organization is coordinating with multiple governments to arrange medical evacuations and determine the severity of the outbreak.
Hantavirus is a rare but potentially fatal disease typically transmitted through exposure to infected rodent droppings or urine. It can lead to severe respiratory complications, and while no specific cure exists, early medical intervention can significantly improve survival outcomes.
