A 16 year old boy has been charged with murdering his 15 year old girlfriend and her nine year old brother inside their family’s Maryland home, days after he allegedly threatened to kill her. Baltimore County Police arrested
Jr. this week and charged him with two counts of first degree murder and a gun charge in connection with the July 7 shooting that killed Giovanna Myrie and her younger brother, Steve Allen.
The shooting happened at the family’s home on Talles Road in Randallstown. Police say James had some kind of relationship with Myrie, though they have not said publicly whether it was romantic. What they have said is more disturbing. Charging documents indicate Myrie had sought help because James threatened to kill her if she “messed around” with other males. She reported that threat before he ever pulled the trigger, and it did not stop what happened next.
Myrie was found shot inside her bedroom. Her nine year old brother, Steve Allen, was found in a hallway. Both were pronounced dead. Investigators say James had been in some form of relationship with Myrie for about two months, but he told police he had not seen her in person since July 4, days before the killing. That timeline puts him at or near the family only days before two people in that home were dead.
Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough said evidence including cellphone records, surveillance footage and text messages links James to the crime. That kind of digital trail is often what turns a threat report into an arrest, and investigators appear to have built the case methodically in the two and a half weeks between the shooting and the charges. James was arrested Wednesday morning at his home in West Baltimore. He appeared in court Thursday, where his attorney waived a bond hearing.
McCullough connected this case to a pattern he says he is seeing more of. He described the tragedy as highlighting juvenile violence against other juveniles, specifically pointing to the growing problem of teen dating violence. That framing matters here because Myrie did what she was supposed to do. She reported a threat. She sought help. The system had a warning in hand before this happened, and a nine year old who had nothing to do with any of it still ended up dead in a hallway of his own home.
There is no detail yet about what led James to the house that day, or what specifically triggered the shooting after days of apparent silence between July 4 and July 7. Those answers may come out as the case moves through the courts. What is already clear is the outcome. A teenage girl who tried to protect herself is gone. Her little brother, who had no part in any of it, is gone with her. And the boy she reported for threatening her life is the one now facing two murder charges.
