Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Darrell Armstrong was arrested early Saturday on charges of aggravated assault after allegedly striking his girlfriend with a gun.

The incident occurred around 3:45 a.m. in the 1000 block of Ross Avenue following an argument. According to an arrest warrant affidavit, the confrontation began when Armstrong’s girlfriend saw a message from another woman on his phone, sparking a dispute. Armstrong, reportedly intoxicated, demanded her apartment key, which she handed over.

At some point during the exchange, Armstrong allegedly entered the kitchen, struck the victim on the right side of her face with a pistol, and threatened to shoot her after loading the gun. In fear for her safety, she fled the apartment, crossing the street to contact her family and the police. Officers observed a mark on her face, and Armstrong was arrested without incident. The weapon was found in the apartment after he consented to a search.

Armstrong was booked into jail before 7:30 a.m. but has since posted bond. The Mavericks issued a statement confirming they are aware of the incident and are gathering information. “We take this matter seriously,” the statement reads, noting that Armstrong has been placed on administrative suspension pending legal proceedings.

Armstrong, who has been with the Mavericks since 2008, previously had a 14-year NBA career and won the Sixth Man of the Year and Most Improved Player awards in 1999.
