What Women Should Know About Men on the Down Low

The real warning signs aren’t how close he is with his boys, they’re the lies, and here’s how to protect yourself

Men on the down low are more common than a lot of women want to believe, and social media has opened my eyes to how often it happens.

For anyone who isn’t sure what it means, a man on the down low dates women and carries on relationships with them while secretly having sex with men. He might be gay. He might be bisexual. Either way, he is hiding it, and the woman he’s with doesn’t know. These men are in the music industry, they’re in your neighborhood and they’re in your workplace.

Let me be clear: I love gay men. What I don’t love is any man using a woman to hide who he really is. It isn’t fair to her, it isn’t safe, and it isn’t right.

We also have to be honest about why it happens. Our community makes it very hard for men to come out. Between the church, family pressure and everything we’ve been taught about what a real man looks like, plenty of men decide hiding is easier than living openly. Understanding that doesn’t make the lying okay, but it explains why so many women end up as cover.

So how do you know if the man you’ve been seeing is on the down low? Start with what doesn’t tell you anything. Being close with his friends, hugging his boys, caring about how he dresses or being on the phone with his homeboy is not a sign of anything. Plenty of straight men do all of that. Judging a man by stereotypes will have you suspicious of the wrong man, and it makes it even harder for men who are struggling to ever be honest.

The real warning signs are about secrecy, not style. Watch for these:

He lies about who he’s talking to, and the story keeps changing.
His phone is always face down, always locked, and never leaves his hand.
He disappears for nights at a time with vague explanations that don’t add up.
There are whole parts of his life you are never allowed into, including friends you never meet and places you never go.
He gets defensive or angry when you ask simple questions.

None of those signs proves he’s on the down low. They do prove he’s hiding something. It could be another woman, it could be a man, it could be something else entirely. Either way, you deserve the truth.

Then there’s your health, and this part is not optional. If you’re having sex with a man, you’re also exposed to everyone he’s been with, men and women. Get tested together before you stop using protection. Use condoms until you both have clean results and you trust that the relationship is truly exclusive. Getting tested regularly isn’t an accusation. It’s just being responsible.

Ask him directly about his sexual history, including whether he has ever been with men. How he reacts can tell you as much as what he says. A man with nothing to hide can handle the question.

Most of all, trust your gut. If something has felt off for a while, it probably is. You don’t need to play detective or go through his phone to know when a man isn’t being honest with you.

The more our community makes room for men to be who they are, the fewer women will end up as somebody’s cover. Until then, learn the real signs, protect your health and believe what your instincts are telling you.
