Delta basic fares are coming to first and business class as the airline expands its tiered pricing model for premium cabins.
During an earnings call last week, executives revealed plans to expand the “Basic” fare model to business and first-class products, potentially launching as early as this year. The move is part of a broader strategy to offer three distinct experiences: Basic, Classic, and Extra, across every seat on the aircraft.
Our goal is to have three categories for every product, which is Basic, Main and Extra,” Delta CEO Ed Bastian noted. For premium travelers, this shift means the core “hard product,” the wider seat or lie-flat bed, will remain the same, but the surrounding perks will be stripped away to lower the entry price.
The new “Basic” premium fares are expected to come with several significant trade-offs for the lower price point:
• No Advance Seat Selection: Passengers will likely be assigned seats after check-in.
• Reduced Loyalty Earnings: Travelers will earn fewer SkyMiles and elite status credits.
• Zero Flexibility: These tickets typically will not include free cancellations or the ability to make flight changes.
• Boarding Restrictions: Basic flyers may be moved to a later boarding group compared to standard premium passengers.
Delta has already been testing this “unbundled” approach with its Comfort+ cabin, which launched last year. Comfort Basic” allows passengers to enjoy extra legroom and complimentary alcoholic beverages at a discount, provided they forgo seat selection and flexibility.
By offering a “skinny” version of first class, Delta is betting that travelers are willing to sacrifice lounge access and refundable tickets if it means finally snagging a seat in the most coveted cabins for less.
Travelers considering the cheaper option should read the fine print. Basic premium tickets are expected to limit seat selection, upgrades, changes, and mileage earnings. Delta is betting demand will stay strong even when perks are removed, especially for flyers who only care about the bigger seat.
