A Delta flight from Amsterdam to Detroit made an unexpected U-turn about an hour after takeoff due to an incident where maggots fell from a passenger’s suitcase onto another traveler.

According to Fox 2 Detroit, passenger Philip Schotte witnessed maggots fall from an overhead suitcase onto another traveler during the flight.

“She was freaking out,” he told the outlet.  “She was just trying to kind of fight off these maggots.”

“I don’t really know what was going through my mind. I was trying to process it – disgust is one thing, of course,” Schotte said. “We had to wait there for help to actually come.”

Flight attendants traced the source of the maggots to a suitcase containing a rotten fish wrapped in a newspaper. The fish was subsequently removed to the back of the plane.

According to the Daily Mail, the passenger responsible for the rotting fish was detained after returning to Amsterdam.

A spokesperson for the airline confirmed that the flight was interrupted due to an “improperly packed carry-on bag.”

Adding that “the aircraft returned to the gate and passengers were placed on the next available flight.  The aircraft was removed from service for cleaning.”

Passengers told the outlet that they received compensation for hotel accommodations, a $30 meal voucher, and 8,000 air miles.
