Demi Lovato is opening up about why she has re-adopted the she/her pronouns after announcing that she was non-binary in 2021.

Demi Lovato says they are now “sober sober” after admitting to still drinking and smoking marijuana last year.

During their 2020 documentary, the singer and actor, who prefers pronouns “they/them,” candidly detailed their near-fatal 2018 fentanyl overdose. The ordeal left them temporarily blind after suffering a heart attack and multiple strokes. In their documentary, Lovato said that they considered themselves to be “California sober,” an approach that excluded hard drugs but still allowed them to indulge in the occasional joint and alcoholic beverage.

“Telling myself that I can never have a drink or smoke marijuana, I feel like that’s setting myself up for failure,” Lovato explained in the doc titled “Demi Lovato: Dancing With the Devil.”

The 29-year-old now says they are kicking the half-sobriety lifestyle and going all-in on their journey to be substance-free.

“I no longer support my ‘California sober’ ways. Sober, sober is the only way to be,” Lovato wrote Thursday on an Instagram Story.

In March, Lovato defended their sobriety method, telling Entertainment Weekly that drug rehabilitation is not a “one-size-fits-all solution.” They also admitted that they were receiving regular doses of anti-opioid injections during that chat.
