Diamonds, a 28 year old Florida woman, has been released on bond while she continues to face an attempted murder charge after she shot a detective during a police raid at her home last year.
The shooting happened on September 28th during a joint narcotics investigation by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Authorities executed a search warrant just before 8 a.m. at the home she shared with her fiance, Anthony. Diamonds has said the couple was asleep and that she believed the house was being burglarized when she heard glass breaking. She says she fired in self defense, striking a detective several times. He returned fire but did not hit her, and he was wearing a bulletproof vest. She called 911 to report a home invasion and, while on the phone, realized it was law enforcement and complied.
Diamonds has maintained that she never heard officers announce themselves. The arrest report says they used a loudspeaker to announce their presence before entering.
She had been held on a $535,000 bond. Groups including Dignity Power, the National Bail Fund Network and the Minnesota Freedom Fund helped raise the money for her release. Her attorney, Stephen Kelly, is calling for all charges to be dropped and said at a news conference outside the Duval County Courthouse that she was in fear for her life. Tray Johns, executive director of Dignity Power, also called for the charges to be dropped.
Speaking to CBS affiliate WJAX TV after her release, Diamonds said she felt “blessed” and was very appreciative of the support.
Anthony remains in jail on a $350,000 bond, and his attorneys have filed a motion to reduce it. Both were also charged with armed possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Both have been charged, and neither has been convicted.
