Actor Stoney Westmoreland, who played a recurring role as Andi’s grandfather on the Disney Channel series Andi Mack, was arrested in Salt Lake City and has been dropped from the show.
According to Deadline, court documents say the arrest followed an investigation into enticing a minor by internet or text. The documents allege that Westmoreland, 48, communicated with someone he believed was 13 years old and asked them to meet and to send nude photos. Police say he was arrested at a hotel while on his way to meet that person.
He was charged with attempting to entice a minor by internet or text and faces four counts of dealing in materials harmful to minors, according to the reports. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on $30,000 bond. These are allegations only, and the charges have not been decided in court. A response from Westmoreland was not included in initial reports.
Disney Channel quickly released a statement. Network spokesperson Patti McTeague said, “we have released him from his recurring role,” and that he will not return to the series, which was set to wrap production on its third season the following week. The network cited its responsibility for the welfare of young people who work on its sets.
Andi Mack is Disney Channel’s top show, and it has ranked first on any network for girls ages 6 to 14. Westmoreland has also appeared in other television series, including Scandal, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.
