The Department of Justice is officially under fire after admitting it missed the legal deadline to release all files connected to Jeffrey Epstein, a deadline Congress passed into law just weeks ago.
Under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, the DOJ was required to release every unclassified document tied to Epstein and his associates within 30 days of the law being signed. Donald Trump signed the legislation in November, putting the final deadline at December 19. That date came and went, with the department confirming it would not fully comply. According to DOJ officials, only a portion of the documents is ready for public release. Hundreds of thousands of additional pages are still undergoing review and redaction, particularly to protect the identities of victims. The department says those remaining files will be released over the coming weeks instead of all at once. That explanation is not sitting well with lawmakers.
Members of Congress argue that the law did not allow for a partial or delayed release. Several Democratic leaders have publicly stated that missing the deadline is a direct violation of federal law and are now weighing legal options to force compliance. The law was passed with overwhelming bipartisan support and was framed as a long-overdue move toward transparency in one of the most disturbing sex trafficking cases in modern history. Lawmakers specifically designed it to remove discretion from the Justice Department and force a full disclosure of what the government knew, when it knew it, and who may be named in the records.
For survivors and advocates, the delay feels familiar and exhausting. Many say the government has had years to prepare for this moment and that missing the deadline only deepens distrust around how Epstein was handled by powerful institutions.
