Doja Cat Admits She Struggled With Cocaine 8 Years Ago And Says Alcohol Fueled Her Darkest Thoughts

Doja Cat is putting years of speculation, substance struggles, and internet-fueled assumptions into her own words. In a series of candid TikTok videos posted Monday, the 30-year-old artist opened up about her history with cocaine, alcohol, and weed while connecting those experiences to mental health and social media. The addiction conversation is especially notable because some of what she revealed directly revisits rumors she publicly pushed back against years ago.

“I’m going to make a disclaimer that I don’t want to make. I have struggled with cocaine, could’ve been like eight years ago,” Doja said.

“But I’m well past that. Thank God,” she added.

The timeline would place that struggle around 2018, but Doja did not provide more details about how frequently she used cocaine, how long the period lasted, or what led her to stop. However, the admission adds a new layer to a conversation that followed Doja long before Monday’s posts.

Back in February 2020, viewers speculated that she had used cocaine after an Instagram Live in which she repeatedly touched her nose and appeared intoxicated. At the time, Doja denied the cocaine theory and joked about why she was touching her face.

“Lol people think I do drugs,” she wrote. “I think I was scared I had boogers, but if you guys want to be worried about me doing cocaine, that’s fine; at least you care. That’s nice of y’all.”

She also acknowledged heavy drinking surrounding that livestream, saying, “I had to be put on an IV for alcohol poisoning shortly after that.” She added, “I over drank. That’s why I look f**king terrible.”

By 2021, Doja was already speaking much more plainly about addiction. In an interview published by Billboard, she described substance use as a major obstacle during her early career.

“The only challenge I ever had was addiction,” she said. “Alcohol and cigarettes were my thing, and weed was my thing. I would smoke and smoke and smoke, and I’d be chain-smoking, and it would mess with my voice, it would mess with my energy.”

Her relationship with marijuana had also shifted before that. In a 2020 LADYGUNN interview, Doja said she had moved toward high-CBD, low-THC strains before backing away after experiencing anxiety from weed that was too strong.

Now, she is drawing a more direct connection between drinking, negative thinking and life online.

Doja said, “undiagnosed mental illness … paired with social media is an extreme issue that I think a lot of us don’t understand.”

“I think that it’s important that we take that into account when we see things on the internet … about ourselves that are negative,” she explained.

Then she got specific about her own experience.

“The best example for my experience is using the internet as a means of validation to the negative thoughts in my head, which were then brought on by drinking alcohol,” she revealed.

“I’ve never had a real problem with drugs, except for weed, but alcohol is something that I definitely have had a problem with,” Doja added.

“I was never an alcoholic, but I definitely had problems. So if I can teach anybody anything, I will tell you that it’s not good to pair these two things together.”

Her posts eventually expanded beyond substance use. Addressing allegations from critics who claimed she hated being Black, the biracial singer spoke about struggling with self-image from childhood.

“I think I hated myself since I was, could have been like 8 years old. And that was when I moved to my predominantly white neighborhood,” she shared.

That discussion also intersects with what Doja has recently revealed about her mental health. Earlier this year, she disclosed that she had been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and said she had spent years in therapy. Vogue’s April 2026 profile similarly documented her discussions of therapy, mental health, and efforts to change habits she considered unhealthy.

“I’ve learned from a very young age to pretend that I like stuff, to pretend that I’m happy, to pretend that I don’t like stuff that I do, to appear like everything is okay,” she previously explained.

“I’ll get it done. And it caught up with me, and I think it always does for people. I’m now struggling with BPD,” she said, describing the condition as “agonizing” and saying she has been in therapy “for years now.”

This time, instead of leaving the internet to fill in the blanks, Doja appears determined to put her version of the story on record.

“I just felt like this TikTok was necessary and I need to get this s**t off of my chest. Today felt like the right day.”

For an artist whose relationship with social media has repeatedly blurred the line between performance, trolling, and personal disclosure, these videos landed differently. The wildest rumors may travel fastest online, but Doja’s latest message was surprisingly straightforward: some of the chaos people watched from the outside was connected to struggles she was still trying to understand herself.
