Miami Dolphins defensive end Derrick Shelby has been placed on indefinite club suspension after an early Saturday morning arrest at a Fort Lauderdale nightclub.
According to Fort Lauderdale police, Shelby was at Cyn Nightclub, formerly known as Off The Hookah, where he was accused of touching women without their permission. Police say that when officers asked him to leave, he refused and asked what they were going to do. The report also says he began recording the officer with his cell phone. When officers told him he was under arrest, police say he pushed away and took what the report describes as an aggressive fighting stance, then locked his arms when officers tried to take him into custody. Police say officers used a Taser after several attempts and verbal warnings.
Shelby was charged with trespassing and resisting arrest without violence. Both are misdemeanors. The details above come from the police account, and Shelby’s side of the story had not been made public in the reports we reviewed.
Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said in a statement that the team was disappointed to learn about the arrest and that everyone in the organization is held to “high standards of conduct and professionalism.” Philbin said Shelby will be on indefinite club suspension while the team finishes its review and decides on final discipline.
