For a large number of people who spent good money to attend Donald Trump’s inauguration, their tickets are no longer valid.
In a statement on Truth Social, President-elect Trump explained, “The various Dignitaries and Guests will be brought into the Capitol. This will be a very beautiful experience for all, and especially for the large TV audience!” Instead of braving the record-freezing cold temperatures expected to hit the area, attendees will gather in the Capitol Rotunda, and the live viewing experience will be extended to Capital One Arena, where Trump promised to join the crowd after his swearing-in.
But there’s a catch: “The vast majority of ticketed guests will not be able to attend the ceremonies in person,” said the Joint Inaugural Committee.
Those with tickets for the Presidential Platform and members of Congress remain the exception. “We strongly suggest people who are in Washington for the event attend other indoor events,” they added.
The U.S. Capitol Police confirmed that the West Front of the Capitol, typically home to the public audience, would be closed. Despite the weather, law enforcement is maintaining heightened security.
As the coldest inauguration in four decades approaches, temperatures are expected to hover around 18 or 19 degrees, with wind chills making it feel like 5 to 10 degrees.
“I don’t want to see people hurt, or injured, in any way,” Trump said. And so, tickets once thought to be prized possessions are now merely “commemorative” keepsakes.
With over 70% of D.C. hotels filled for the inauguration, it’s evident that many people traveling to witness Trump being sworn in have likely wasted time and money.
