Donald Trump has been on a roll all week following the midterm elections. In his newest series of antics, Trump showed love to the military by skipping a stop at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial due to rain and then arrived separately from other leaders to an event honoring the anniversary of World War I.
Over the weekend, The White House issued a statement saying that rain altered plans for Trump to fly to the military cemetery via helicopter. Nicholas Soames, Winston Churchill‘s grandson and a member of Parliament expressed his disdain for Trump’s decision to skip the event, tweeting, “They died with their face to the foe and that pathetic inadequate @realDonaldTrump couldn’t even defy the weather to pay his respects to The Fallen,”
then adding, “#hesnotfittorepresenthisgreatcountry”
Social media got in on blasting Trump for his absence by highlighting other presidents who have stood in rain to pay their respects. One user posted President John F. Kennedy standing in the rain in 1961 to pay his respects to fallen soldiers in Paris and Former White House photographer Pete Souza posted an Instagram gallery of various times forever President #BarackObama stood tall in the rain.
Veteran’s group #VoteVets tweeted, “Donald Trump complained about having to stand in the rain, to speak about the massacre in Pittsburgh, because it messed his hair up (more),” the group tweeted. “Today, he will skip honoring fallen American heroes of WWI, and stay in his hotel room, because of some rain.”
In a separate engagement, Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel, France’s President Emmanuel Macron, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other dignitaries gathered at the Élysée Palace in Paris, drove to the Arc de Triomphe and walked the rest of the way alongside one another to honor the anniversary of World War I, according to CNN.
Meanwhile, Trump came in a different car “due to security protocols,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters.
