Mary Trump says her uncle, former President Donald Trump, will tease a 2024 run for the White House but will never actually follow through.
Speaking with MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan on Monday, Mary Trump, who wrote a critical book about her family last year, said she believes Donald Trump is only playing along. “I think he’s going to pretend to,” she said.
Her reasoning is about money. She argued that the former president has brought in a lot of cash from supporters since the November election, and she believes he wants to keep that going. According to reports at the time, his political operation has raised well over $100 million since the election, much of it tied to his claims that the vote was stolen. Those claims have been rejected by courts and election officials across the country.
Mary Trump also said she does not think her uncle will go through with a run because he does not want to risk losing again. The former president has not announced any 2024 plans, and his team has not responded to her comments.
Still, Republican leaders are keeping the door open. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said over the weekend that he would “absolutely” support Trump if he became the party’s nominee. Sen. Lindsey Graham has said he plans to lean on Trump’s political brand to help the party in the 2022 midterms. Sen. Mitt Romney told the New York Times that Trump would likely win the nomination in a landslide if he ran.
On Saturday, Trump teased the idea himself in a speech to conservatives, joking that he might beat Democrats “a third time.”
For now, it is Mary Trump’s opinion against the former president’s silence, and we will see how 2024 plays out.
