During the ASCAP Brunch, Durand Bernarr opened up about the long road that led to his Grammy win and why the grind mattered just as much as the trophy.

After years of building his voice, audience, and vision without shortcuts, Bernarr framed the moment as earned, not accidental.
“It feels like all of the things that I’ve gone through, all the things in my body and my mind, have endured to get to this point. It was necessary. It was worth it,” he explained to Baller Alert. For Bernarr, the journey added meaning to the win. “It adds weight to the story. It adds weight to the testimony.”
That weight came from learning how to turn struggle into strategy.
“I was able to turn my mess into a message,” he explained, adding that his career now stands as proof that independence is not a limitation. “And also provide a template and a blueprint, you know. because a lot of people might think they can’t do it because they’re independent, or it has to be this level of production in order to get it out.”
Bernarr pushed back on perfection paralysis with humor and honesty. “And my thing is, as Kev on stage said, people are literally watching content sitting on the toilet…Just get it out. We have to stop being afraid of things having its beginning stages, you know?”
For Bernarr, the Grammy is not the finish line. It is proof that starting, sharing, and staying consistent can carry you all the way through.
