Nearly 2 Million Dozen Eggs Recalled Over Salmonella Fears, 79 Infected Across 7 States

Nearly two million dozen eggs are being pulled from shelves due to a salmonella scare. On June 6th, the FDA confirmed that August Egg Company in Hilmar, California, is recalling 1.7 million dozen brown cage-free and certified organic eggs over contamination concerns.

The recall spans several states, including major retailers like Walmart across Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Washington, and Wyoming. The affected eggs, sold between February 3rd and May 15th, 2025, carry plant codes P-6562 or CA5330 with Julian dates between 32 and 126.

The recall follows an outbreak infecting 79 people across seven states. Most cases originated in California (63), with others in Washington, Nevada, Arizona, Nebraska, Kentucky, and New Jersey. The CDC reports illnesses occurred from February 24th to May 17th, 2025, with 21 hospitalizations but no deaths. They caution that the real number of cases may be higher, as many people recover without seeing a doctor.

August Egg Company stated it “immediately began diverting all eggs from the plant to an egg-breaking facility, which pasteurizes the eggs and kills any pathogens.”

Consumers are urged not to eat the recalled eggs and return them for a full refund. Questions can be directed to August Egg Company at 1-800-710-2554.

Salmonella symptoms include stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, and fever. The CDC advises seeking medical help for severe symptoms and following food safety guidelines like washing hands, cooking food thoroughly, and refrigerating items promptly. Vulnerable groups include infants, seniors, those with weakened immune systems, and people with sickle cell disease.
