EJ Johnson, son of NBA veteran Magic Johnson, just gave a masterclass in Birkin etiquette, and the message landed loud. If your bag is oversized and the sun is down, he’s already side-eyeing you.

Breaking it down for his audience, EJ started with the basics.
“We need to talk about the Birkin, ladies and gentlemen,” he said, before zeroing in on the 35 centimeter. According to him, that size has a clear schedule. “35 centimeters are for going to your daytime things… your fashion show during the day, or to your lunch during the day, or to a breakfast during the day… but anyway, it’s during the day.”
And when night hits, the rules change. Completely.
“Please don’t bring your large format bag on a red carpet at night or during your dinner,” he said plainly. “You must go home and change and find a smaller format bag.”
He didn’t just suggest it. He acted it out.
“This does not go to dinner. She’s not going to dinner… she’s going home to go to sleep because she has an early day the next day.” Meanwhile, the smaller bags? “They can go out. They can stay up a little bit later… she can go to the club.”
For evening, EJ pointed to the right players. A Birkin 25, a mini Kelly, or “we also love a Kelly clutch… she’s a clutch. She’s going to dinner.”
Still, he kept it real for anyone caught outside in a fashion emergency. “If you can’t make it home, be crafty,” he said, suggesting you tuck the larger bag away but come prepared with something smaller.
By the end, it wasn’t just about accessories. It was about intention. “This conversation is a conversation that I’ve always wanted to have,” EJ said, and now that he has, consider the rules clearly stated.
