Hip-hop journalist Elliott Wilson has publicly apologized for his recent comments about SZA’s new film, “One of Them Days,” which co-stars Keke Palmer.

The situation unfolded after Wilson commented “Why?” on SZA’s Twitter (X) post that included a trailer for her movie. Wilson was met with immediate backlash, with many social media users accusing him of undermining Black women’s creativity.

However, Wilson has come forward to say sorry to the singer on his “The Bigger Picture” show. During the episode, the rap historian admitted that his comments stemmed from ignorance and clarified his statement. Wilson shared that he had spoken to SZA privately but felt compelled to apologize again.

“I’m a big SZA fan musically. I love the last album,” Wilson began. “She teased more music coming, even though this record’s still top 20. She doesn’t have to give us no music anymore. She’s still on top. I selfishly thought we were getting more music. I had no knowledge that this movie was coming out. And I would assume if she’s in a movie, she’s only doing like a cameo or something. I didn’t know it was like a real thespian-type thing that she’s behind. I didn’t know Issa Rae was part of it. I didn’t know any of this s**t,” he explained.

Wilson continued, “So, I ignorantly reacted to it. ‘Why we rocking to this? Where’s the slaps?’ That was my initial mentality, but that was ignorant. They tore my a** up on Twitter. ‘I don’t want Black women to win, make movies,’ and all this type of stuff. So, all of that got real nasty. Behind the scenes, I already apologized. I just wanna say publically, I was definitely wrong.”

Nonetheless, “One Of Them Days” is directed by Lawrence Lamont and written by Syreeta Singleton. Rae serves as producer on the movie. The flick will premiere in theaters in January 2025 and promises to showcase SZA’s versatility as an actress and artist.
