Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has suggested that U.S. taxpayers could receive a $5,000 payout thanks to savings from his agency’s budget cuts. Musk posted the idea on X (formerly Twitter), saying he plans to discuss it with President Donald Trump.

The concept, which Musk calls the “DOGE Dividend,” would distribute a refund check to every American citizen. While the proposal sounds appealing, the numbers behind it raise serious financial questions.

To put Musk’s idea into perspective, let’s break down the math:

  • The estimated U.S. population in 2024 is about 335 million people.
  • Giving each person $5,000 would cost $1.675 trillion in total.
  • That amount is nearly 40% of the total federal budget ($4.9 trillion in 2024).
  • It also represents about 6% of the U.S. GDP ($28 trillion).

This means the government would need to find nearly $1.7 trillion in savings to fund the program, an amount greater than the entire annual budget for Social Security ($1.4 trillion).

Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency was created to cut wasteful federal spending, but it’s unclear how much money the agency has actually saved. Even with aggressive budget cuts, experts question whether the government could free up enough cash for such a large payout.

The Trump administration has already slashed funding for various programs, including:

  • $600 million in education grants
  • Major reductions in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives
  • Cuts to government contracts deemed “unnecessary”

However, these cuts add up to billions, not trillions. Finding an additional $1.675 trillion would likely require deep reductions in major federal programs, such as Social Security, Medicare, or defense spending, something that would face heavy political resistance.

At this stage, Musk’s “DOGE Dividend” is just an idea, and there’s no official plan for how it would be implemented. Frankly,  it’s unrealistic, given the massive price tag and the challenge of identifying enough government savings to fund it.
