Former WWE champion Alberto Del Rio is facing serious felony charges in Texas. According to TMZ, which reported the story on October 9, 2020, officials announced that the wrestler, whose real name is reported as Jose Rodriguez Chucuan, is charged with four counts of sexual assault and one count of aggravated kidnapping. Other outlets described the case as a grand jury indictment.
The charges come from an incident in early May involving his ex girlfriend. TMZ reported that Del Rio was arrested in San Antonio at that time.
The accuser’s account, as reported by TMZ, is that Del Rio became enraged after accusing her of cheating. She alleged that he smashed her phone and laptop and tried to burn her passport during an incident that began around 10 PM on May 3 and lasted until about 2:30 PM on May 4. She also alleged that he hit her and that she was sexually assaulted. TMZ reported that the responding officer noted multiple bruises on her face, arms, legs and neck.
Those details are allegations from the accuser and have not been proven in court. TMZ’s report did not include a statement from Del Rio or his attorney, and we have not seen a response from him. An indictment is an accusation, not a conviction, and Del Rio is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
