The trial of Jelani Maraj, the brother of Nicki Minaj, continued this week with testimony from a forensic expert about DNA evidence. Maraj is charged with sexually abusing a child, has pleaded not guilty, and denies the allegations.
According to Page Six, the expert testified on Tuesday that there was less than a 1 in 348 billion chance that DNA found on an item of clothing belonged to someone other than Maraj. She said his DNA profile was consistent with a stain on the item.
The Daily News reported that the same expert, who once worked at the Nassau County medical examiner’s office, also said she could not be sure Maraj was the source. She testified that she found a mixture of DNA on the item when it was sent to the lab in 2015. Although male DNA was present, she said she could not conclude that it belonged to Maraj.
The testimony came one day after a young witness took the stand. The alleged victim has not been named here.
Since the trial began, there has been plenty of back and forth between the media and the defense. Maraj’s attorney initially told reporters that Nicki Minaj would be a key witness, but her team disputed that and said she never planned to testify at all. Many details of the case remain unclear, and the trial continues. Baller Alert will keep you posted.
