An Alabama fan was shot and killed after an Iron Bowl watch party in Hoover, Alabama, and police have charged another guest with murder, according to Fox News and USA Today Sports.
Hoover police say Michelle Shepherd, 36, a mother of three from Birmingham, was shot in the parking lot of an apartment complex after Auburn beat Alabama 34 to 28 by returning a missed field goal as time expired. Adrian, 28, of Birmingham, was charged with murder on Monday, December 2, 2013.
Michelle’s sister, Nekesa, who says she saw the shooting, told reporters that guests were joking that the loss was not as bad as a Miami Heat loss when Adrian became angry and told the sisters they were not real Alabama fans. Police say the two women did not know each other before the party, which about two dozen people attended after a mutual friend invited them.
Police have not said the game was the motive. Hoover Police Capt. Jim Coker told reporters that investigators are still looking into that and that alcohol may have played a role, with toxicology results still pending. Court records did not show whether Adrian has an attorney, and no statement from Adrian appeared in early reports. A charge is not a conviction.
It is fine to be a hardcore fan of your team, but a game is only a game. Baller Alert sends condolences to Michelle’s family and friends.
