The FBI has arrested a U.S. Army soldier accused of discussing a plan to bomb a major American news network, according to charging documents reported by ABC News and other outlets.
The soldier, identified in court documents as Jarrett, was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas. He was arrested on Sept. 21 and charged with distributing information related to weapons of mass destruction. Prosecutors say he shared instructions for building explosive devices online. The charging documents also allege that he told an undercover FBI agent he wanted to travel to Ukraine to fight alongside the Azov Battalion, a far right paramilitary group, and that he named possible targets, including a news network headquarters and Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke.
According to the documents, Jarrett reportedly joined the Army after first saying he wanted to fight in Ukraine, and transferred to Fort Riley in July. Authorities say he discussed possible attacks inside the United States with an FBI informant in an online chat group in August. Reports also say he told investigators he teaches people online how to build bombs. Prosecutors further allege he had been in contact since 2016 with another American who traveled to Ukraine to fight with a different far right group.
These are allegations from a criminal complaint. The soldier has not been convicted of any crime, and the case is just getting started in federal court in Kansas.
