FBI Director Christopher Wray announced on Wednesday his intention to resign at the end of the Biden administration, just before Donald Trump takes office.
In his prepared remarks, Wray explained that his decision was motivated by a desire to prevent the FBI from becoming embroiled in political turmoil while preserving the agency’s core values.
“After weeks of careful thought, I’ve decided the right thing for the Bureau is for me to serve until the end of the current Administration in January and then step down,” he stated. Wray emphasized his commitment to the mission of the FBI and maintaining its integrity. “My focus is, and always has been, on us and doing what’s right for the FBI… What absolutely cannot, must not change is our commitment to doing the right thing, the right way, every time.”
Trump has already announced his intention to nominate Kash Patel as the next FBI director. In an interview with NBC News, Trump voiced dissatisfaction with Wray, particularly in light of the 2022 FBI search at Mar-a-Lago that led to Trump’s indictment.
“I mean, it would sort of seem pretty obvious that if Kash gets in, he’s going to be taking somebody’s place, right?” Trump remarked.
Trump also praised Wray’s departure, describing it as a step towards restoring the FBI to his vision.
“I look forward to Kash Patel’s confirmation so that the process of Making the FBI Great Again can begin,” Trump stated on his social media platform.
Attorney General Merrick Garland and the FBI Agents Association (FBIAA) praised Wray’s leadership during his tenure, highlighting his unwavering commitment to the bureau’s mission. As Wray prepares to step down, the FBI will soon enter a new era, with significant questions about its future under Trump’s new leadership.
