The Food and Drug Administration is working to approve a half-dose of Moderna’s COVID–19 vaccine as a booster shot.
According to the NY Post, sources claim the agency believes that the half dosage level as a booster would provide enough protection against the virus.
The drugmaker pushed for the half-dose shot in its booster application submitted to government regulators on Sept. 1.
Moderna’s original vaccine contains 100 micrograms of mRNA in each shot, while Pfizer has 30 micrograms in its initial and booster doses.
The FDA already approved Pfizer’s booster effort for people over the age of 65 and anyone older than 18 who has an underlying medical condition that makes them more susceptible to the disease.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has already recommended that people receive boosters from the same drug manufacturer as their initial doses.
