Federal prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty against Jairo, 24, an alleged Long Island MS 13 gang member charged in connection with seven murders.
The New York Post reported that Jairo, also known as Funny, could face execution if he is convicted in any of the killings.
According to the indictment filed in federal court in Central Islip, prosecutors describe him as the second in command of the Sailors Locos Salvatruchas Westside clique. Among the killings he is charged in connection with are the 2016 deaths of Kayla, 16, and Nisa, 15, two teens from Brentwood, Long Island who were attacked on their way home from school. Their deaths drew national attention.
Court filings also allege that while in jail he took part in attacks on other inmates, assaulted corrections officers, and tried to identify people cooperating with prosecutors. These are allegations, and he has not been convicted.
This past summer, prosecutors announced they also intend to seek the death penalty against his brother, Alexi. A response from the defense was not available at the time of this report.
