Tragedy struck Piedmont (Bay Area California) early Wednesday morning when a Tesla Cybertruck carrying four young friends crashed into a tree, burst into flames, and left three of the passengers dead.
Authorities report that the high-tech Cybertruck jumped a curb before slamming into a tree. The force of the collision partially wrapped the truck around the tree, and the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames moments later.
An occupant in the front seat was pulled from the wreckage by someone following in another car, but the flames were too intense for additional rescues.
Piedmont Police Chief Jeremy Bowers said officers arrived on the scene within two minutes of being alerted by an iPhone in the Cybertruck that automatically contacted emergency services. Despite using fire extinguishers, police were unable to put out the fire before the Piedmont Fire Department arrived and extinguished the blaze at 3:16 a.m.
The victims have been identified as recent graduates of Piedmont High School’s class of 2023. The friends, home for the holidays from college, were described as beloved members of the community.
Flowers now surround the charred tree where the accident occurred. Sandy Martin, a former middle school teacher of the victims, tearfully shared her memories. “They were incredible kids with wonderful families,” she said. “No matter the why’s, it’s just so horrible.”
The sole survivor of the crash remains in critical condition, suffering from severe burns. He is under sedation, and loved ones are praying for his recovery.
The tragic crash has reignited conversations about road safety, especially with newer, high-performance vehicles like the Tesla Cybertruck. With its advanced technology and high speeds, the Cybertruck is under scrutiny.
The California Highway Patrol and local authorities continue to investigate the heartbreaking incident.
